How do I clean my high-performance or reversible yoga mat?

The mat can be easily cleaned with a damp cloth and, if necessary, a little mild detergent.

PU mats are quite durable because their surface is sealed and prevents dirt and sweat from penetrating. This makes them easy to clean. However, they should never be cleaned with vinegar solutions, as acid will dull the surface. The same applies to TPE mats. Neither should ever be washed in a washing machine or vacuumed.

Cleaning with yoga mat spray

For a quick refresh, you can spray the mat with a yoga mat spray and pat it dry with a cloth. You can either buy a spray or create your own DIY yoga mat spray.

However, you should only perform this type of cleaning infrequently to protect your mat. Generally, washing it once every two months is sufficient, provided you clean your mat immediately after use. This way, its shape, quality, and colors will be preserved for a long time.

DIY yoga mat spray

These are the ingredients you will need:
  • 40 ml distilled water (boiled tap water also works)

  • 40 ml of odorless alcohol with 40% vol

  • 5 drops of tea tree oil (has antibacterial properties)

  • 5-10 drops of an essential oil of your choice, e.g. cinnamon (sensual), lavender (calming) or lemongrass (pleasantly fresh)

Mix all ingredients in a spray bottle. Spray bottles are available in drugstores, for example. A small bottle with a capacity of 100 ml is sufficient.

Application:
  • Spray a thin layer onto your mat. Ideally, right after your yoga session.

  • Take a damp cloth and wipe the mat carefully.

  • Allow the mat to dry completely before rolling it up.

3 care tips for a long-lasting clean mat

Once clean, you'll want to keep your mat free of dirt for as long as possible. With the right routine before and after your yoga practice, you'll only need to clean it rarely in the future, and you'll also extend its lifespan.

#1 Clean your yoga mat regularly

Ideally, you should integrate wiping with a damp cloth directly into your yoga routine. This prevents sweat and skin particles from penetrating the surface.

#2 Don't be a slob

To keep your mat clean for longer, a quick self-cleaning before practice is essential. Wash your feet and hands before every yoga session. This will prevent much dirt from getting onto the mat in the first place.

#3 Keep your mat rolled up

It seems logical, but it's easily forgotten in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. And then the mat lies on the living room floor for days, collecting dust. So remember, you'll have less work if you roll it up immediately after use.
